Teaching style

Lessons are personalised to the individual. I use a variety of different teaching methods, books and styles of music to motivate and excite students. The aim is to create a love of music so that students want to learn more.

Young children

Does your child love music but has out grown their baby music group? The next stage is musicianship lessons. Through songs and games children learn the building blocks of music. Children learn listening, singing, percussion and music notation skills. This firm foundation allows them to later on focus on the physical demands of the instrument rather than trying to grapple with reading music.  I currently use resources from the teaching scheme Jolly Music. These lessons are best delivered in small groups (2-4 children).

Does your child want to get their hands on an instrument? Learning the piano and cello is great fun (particularly if your music teacher makes it so!). Children learn best if they are enjoying the experience. Hence my lessons use games, stories and all my ingenuity to make learning an instrument as effortless as possible. Children are given little manageable steps so that they feel success at every turn. Feedback is phrased positively and is balanced with lots of praise.

For cello beginners, the Colourstrings approach is my favourite. If you read about the philosophy you will understand why the approach is so inspiring and beneficial for young beginners.  However I dip into several different books such as the Cello Time series and we can also play tunes with funky backing tracks.

For piano beginners, I favour the Doremi resources. Again this is a Kodály-based approach where musicianship skills are intertwined with the physical aspect of playing the piano. I also use the  Piano Time series or I am happy to use any books that you already have at home.

Teenagers

Are you looking for a new teacher or does your child have a burning desire to learn the piano or cello?

Pupil voice plays an important role in designing lessons for teenagers. Each student has a say in designing their own curriculum as well as setting their goals. Pupils can choose the music they would like to play, regardless of genre. Some students choose to learn ABRSM grade repertoire while other enjoy playing songs from movies or the charts. Students are encouraged to play music that they enjoy so that they are motivated to practise. I arrange any requested music for the specific instrument and difficulty level using music software. I integrate technical skills and musicianship alongside this personalised curriculum.

Lessons are fast paced and lively. I particularly enjoy being able to accompany students on the piano so that pupils learn how to play alongside others. Students are encouraged to self-reflect on their performances. Feedback is given positively and encouragement always given.

I can prepare students for Music Medals, ABRSM exams, ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory and ABRSM aural tests. However, this is optional and is not the be-all and end-all of learning an instrument.

Adults

It is never too late to learn! Have you always wanted to learn the cello or piano? Do you want some refresher lessons to help with your technique? Or do you need some motivation to help you practise? Do you want to learn alongside your child?

I enjoy introducing adults to the cello or piano and developing their musicianship skills. Lessons are always encouraging and supportive. Adults may wish to explore repertoire or set themselves the challenge of entering an ABRSM exam.
